Join us for a conversation about glyphosate with Dr. Charles Benbrook, a renowned expert on agricultural systems and their impact on health and the environment.

Cancer rates are on the rise in Iowa, and every year half of our state is bathed in pesticides containing the controversial chemical glyphosate. Meanwhile, the Iowa state legislature is considering a bill – the Cancer Gag Act – that would grant multi-billion-dollar corporations legal immunity from any lawsuits alleging their pesticides cause cancer.

Dr. Benbrook will discuss the potential ramifications of the Cancer Gag Act, new research on the links between exposure to Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides and blood cancer risks, and the connection between soil health and public health.

Jessica Wiskus lives in Lisbon where she’s been working with neighbors to oppose the CO2 pipeline since it was proposed in the fall of 2021.  In the struggle to stand firm and strong, neighbors have been reaching across the state, demonstrating extraordinary trust and support. What strategies have been effective and what do the landowners say they need right now to stand strong?

Dr. Maureen McCue she is with Physicians for Social Responsibility and at the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights. She is interviewed by Ed Fallon of The Fallon Forum podcast. They discuss CO2 pipelines and why they are a public health concern, especially in Iowa. The interview was published on November 9th 2022. Good Neighbor Iowa is a state-wide public health initiative that aims to reduce unnecessary urban pesticide use and to transform lawn culture to encourage an appreciation of diverse lawns as a way to protect child health, water quality, pets, pollinators, and biodiversity.

The following talk titled "Climate Change and Policy" was presented at The Center in Iowa City Iowa by Jerry Schnoor on March 5th, 2018. He is a professor in civil and environmental engineering, and co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research at the University of Iowa. This presentation was part of our "Barbara Schlachter Memorial Lecture Series". The first speaker you will hear is Diane Dillon-Ridgley. In his talk, he discusses global greenhouse gas emissions, ocean temperature and acidity, arctic ice loss, sea level rise and flooding, hurricane intensity, the Paris Agreement, and what we need to do to reduce our emissions.
