105: Conversations on the Book "So You Want to Talk about Race" Pt 2

Listen Later

This week we have two episodes for you. These episodes are part of a series of conversations with colleagues from around the state on the book So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. We'll be bringing you the conversations mostly in their entirety - editing only for flow and where participants requested that something not be placed in the public conversation.

I want to thank everyone who participated in these conversations. These conversations are hard, but we must have them if we're going to dismantle systemic racism in our country and in our college.

In the two episodes, we discuss a number of different resources you may find useful. I apologize that these may not be in the order in which we discussed them:

  • Article - The Case for Reparations by Ta-Nehisi Coates - https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/
  • Caught Podcast - https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/caught
  • We also discussed the work our partners at Ball State University are doing in their English department. You can learn more about BSU's English department here: https://www.bsu.edu/academics/collegesanddepartments/english. Their specific recent blog post about decolonizing curriculum is available at https://blogs.bsu.edu/english/blog/2020/06/05/english-department-commits-to-anti-racist-action/
  • In the second episode we also discussed the activity from Unpack Your Knapsack which you can find at https://www.racialequitytools.org/resourcefiles/mcintosh.pdf.
  • We also heard about The Root which you can visit at https://www.theroot.com/.

Thanks again to every member of our conversation. It takes a great deal of courage to have these conversations. As the Call to Action I remind you that if something made you feel uncomfortable or even angry, please sit with that for a little while. Ask yourself why. Have a conversation with a colleague you trust to talk with you honestly about the issues of race and racism.

If you'd like to listen to the book So You Want to Talk About Race and you are a member of the Ivy Tech community, you can download the book from our Ivy Tech library to listen to. Please talk with your local librarian about how to do so.
