  • The share of Americans who favor same sex-marriage grew steadily for most of the last decade, but public support has leveled off in the last few years.
  • 79% of Americans who are religiously unaffiliated favor same-sex marriage. Among white evangelical Protestants, however, only 29% favor same-sex marriage.
  • 45% of adults in the Silent Generation (those born between 1928 and 1945) favor allowing gays and lesbians to wed, compared with 74% of Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996).
  • Republicans and Republican-leaning independents are much less likely to favor same sex marriage than Democrats and Democratic leaners (44% vs. 75%).
  • 61% of same-sex cohabiting gay couples are married, compared to 53% of heterosexual couples.
  • 84% of LGBT adults and 88% of the general public cited love as a very important reason for getting married.
  • LGBT Americans are twice as likely as those in the general public to cite legal rights and benefits as a very important reason for getting married (46% versus 23%).
  • Marriage between same-sex couples is legally performed and recognized in 37 of 195 countries worldwide, with a total population of 1.4 billion people (17% of the world's population).
  • 35 countries have definitions of marriage in their constitutions that prevent marriage between couples of the same sex.
  • Female same-sex marriage is practiced in Kenya and Nigeria. However, this is not seen as homosexual, but is instead a way for families without sons to perpetuate inheritance and family lineage.
