Topics covered:
1) We started talking about the passing of Coolio and the importance of Gangster's Paradise. However, we then took a side trek and talked about the movies Dangerous Minds and Freedom Writers and what they could have done better to connect the content they taught to the lived lives of the students they were teaching.
2) We talked about Woman King and pondered the message that was sent by focusing on a nation of badass Black woman warriors who also enslaved neighboring groups of Africans.
3) A prestigious university in New York fired a tenured faculty member when 82 of the 350 students in the class signed a petition that stated that the class was unnecessarily hard and that the professor did not care about the lives of students outside of the classroom. This led to a conversation about the commodification of education and how teachers can become better teachers.
