Charles Woodward paid his way through BYU by boxing. His skill as a pugilist paved the way for him to box the Southern Hemisphere’s heavy weight champion, Kiotone Lave, immediately after his mission to Tonga. The heavily publicized fight took place in Aukland New Zealand. Elder Woodward’s motivation in arranging this match was to acquire the funds to send Mosese Muti and his wife, to the Aukland New Zealand Temple dedication where they could then receive their sealing ordinances. Charles and Mosese had worked side by side for over 2 years building chapels and spreading the message of the restoration of the gospel. Charles had come to love and respect this faithful hard working Tongan family, and desperately wanted to help them fulfill their dream of being sealed in the House of the Lord. This is just one of the stories in this amazing episode, demonstrating the faith and miracles that attends the Polynesian people. These stories of the gospel coming to Tonga weave some of the events that led to two-thirds of the nation of Tonga now being members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
