“Leadership is a lifestyle”
Sam Thiara has written a book about Personal Storytelling and a memoir about his journey to India to discover his forgotten roots.
In 1903 Sam’s grandfather left the Punjab in India on a ship destined for Argentina, but decided to jump ship in Fiji.
From Fiji Sam’s family moved to the UK (where Sam was born) and eventually settled in Vancouver, Canada.
Aware that his family’s tie with India was getting thinner with each generation, Sam took it upon himself to find the family’s ancestral home. Armed with a single, colour photograph he headed to the closest town to where he thought his family came from.
In the memoir, Sam takes his readers through his journey of discovery and shares what he learnt from the experience.
Before the trip, Sam Thiara said of his heritage that he felt like a Thali tray with many distinct elements to his history, but all of which were kept separate.
By the end of his trip he realised that in fact the better analogy was more like Kedgeree - a mix of ingredients held in a delicious combination in one bowl.
In his professional life, Sam Thiara teaches and coaches on Leadership.
He describes himself as ‘the difficult monk’ who doesn't tell his clients what to do, but asks lots of questions because he believes that they have the answers inside of them. His job is to draw those answers out.
Ultimately, he says, Leadership is about followers. Followers are the ones who choose if somebody is a leader or not.
What does that have to do with being an author?
As an author of either fiction or non-fiction, you are a leader.
You use your words to share an experience, real or imagined. You share something important and it’s up to your readers to decide if they agree with you and will follow you.
If you share what’s important, says Sam, people will follow you. That includes readers.
‘Never hold back.’
You can change the world with your words, says Sam. From our ordinary lives come extraordinary stories and when we share them, we give others the opportunity to see the world differently.
It’s not our job to try to change people’s opinion, but offer an alternative.
As a writer, you are a Leader and Sam encourages you to embrace that position and believe in yourself. When you do, you stand a much better chance of sticking the course of putting your book into the world and finding your own ‘followers’.
