In his lifetime, Revolutionary War veteran John Lamont became a punchline for his Ashtabula neighbors, who blamed him for everything that went wrong in their lives. They interpreted his eccentricity and anti-social behavior as a sign that he was a wizard. Modern historians don't know about that, but they do think he may have been a killer.
