Chris Patterson: I want to know what questions to ask and what to say when meeting with a show runner.
- While building a long game of building relating, know your endgame and go through the 5 different outreach approaches is best suited for your meeting:
- Peer approach: you share the same goals or you share the same obstacles.
- Expert approach: they are doing now what you want to be doing next, or they’ve achieved the goals that you want to achieve next.
- Mentor approach: an extension of the expert approach over time.
- Advocate approach: the person isn't the direct gatekeeper, but they can open doors and facilitate introductions.
- Gatekeeper approach: the person is directly in between you and the opportunities that you're looking for.
- Take the gatekeeper approach if you know his problems that you can solve, and can potentially make their life easier.
- Make the meeting about them even if you play the long game: learn more about their goals and obstacles and share your stories that are relevant to them.
- Build comfort and trust by having conversations (apart from work) to see if you share the same interest and speak the same language.
- Make sure to make them talk more and make him feel that he is leading the conversation around your general theme.
- Face it until you make it: Believe that you can do the job and make their show better even if you are not ready; you just have to push through it.
