- Have a landmark or a “North Star” where you move towards, to know where you’re supposed to be doing with your time, energy, and attention.Â
- Think broadly about work and life – the kind of person that you want to become, and the kind of life that you want to lead.
- Understand the difference between your vision and your goals:
- Vision is more exploratory, and about something that you can see and feel.
- Goals are something that you can track and can work towards.Â
- Vision will help you answer the following question:Â
- Is this thing in front of me an opportunity or a distraction?Â
- Is this an opportunity to move closer to my vision, or is this taking me further away from it?
- Have a clear SCARY Goal based on your vision and have a realistic timeline.
- S - Strategic. Does this goal move me closer to the vision for work and life?Â
- C - Challenging. Is there any part of this that sounds easy and more than doable?
- A - Aspirational. Is this something that you really aspire and inspire you?
- R - Relevant. Is it meaningful to you and within your skill sets and abilities?
- Y - “Why.” Does this align with the deeper “why” for the vision for work and life, why you do the work that you do, and you feel a sense of meaning and purpose behind it?
- Have a certain level of control on a goal that you can literally write a timeblock on your calendar.
