Jacob Wells: Lately, I've been going to a lot of in person networking events and meeting interesting people, but not sure how to reach out.
- Shift from “I want to be you” to “How did you become you” to spark deeper conversations. Break their story into actions they actually took by asking better questions
- Get more specific by sharing your hero’s journey, your next step and your obstacle so they can help you solve the exact problem you’re facing now.
- Create value by acknowledging their work, showing how it impacted you and giving them a meaningful chance to contribute to your progress.
- Use the Benjamin Franklin effect by asking for a small favor or insight, opening tension-free conversation and giving them the opportunity to feel thanked and appreciated.
- Ask questions specific enough that they feel they can be truly useful, which delivers real value to them while giving you better guidance.
- Follow the cycle of mentorship: ask a question, take action, report results, then ask your next sharper question.
- Accept that your job doesn’t have to be your calling; it can simply support the creative work or purpose that lights you up.
- Sit down with a blank page titled What lights me up and write freely to uncover the creative forces that energize and guide your next moves.
