Before Saudi Arabia offered any official explanation for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at its Istanbul consulate on October 2, there was a steady drip of information coming from Turkish security sources – from the amount of time Khashoggi spent in the consulate, to the more gruesome details of his death.
In the days following Khashoggi’s disappearance, journalists around the world worked to create a picture of the events – much of which contradicted the official line coming from Riyadh.
Here at Storyful, we took the information that was emerging at early stages and, with the help of open source tools, began to search extensively for any corroborating evidence. Once details of the 15 suspects in the case had been published, we were able to uncover more about them with the help of official Saudi websites, local media archives, and personal social media accounts.
One of our senior journalists, Razan Ibraheem, worked extensively on the story from the beginning, and not only uncovered evidence of the suspects’ links to the Saudi government, but also tracked an online campaign against Khashoggi’s fiancee in the period after his killing.
Our latest podcast explores the verification work that we did to uncover the truth in this case.
