Every Damn Thing

11. Plants, Charmander, Sex

Listen Later

Phil and Jake sell out with a special PG-rated episode to expand the List of Every Damn Thing by ranking plants, the Pokemon character Charmander (a cute orange lizard with a tail that’s on fire), and sex.

ADVISORY: Contrary to claims made during our conversation, we decided to mark this episode with the "explicit content" flag because we discuss some things that might be inappropriate (or at least boring) for children.

SHOW NOTES:

  • Jake mentions using an apple to make something that resembles a flute. It turns out you can’t use that to play music, but we did find this example of instruments made from veggies.
  • The tea tree oil that's used in the toothpicks that Phil mentions is from Australia, but it’s not from the eucalyptus tree. He’s right, though, that the eucalyptus is a wildfire-fueling invasive species to California.
  • We discuss the relationship between crows & scarecrows some more. Plus, Phil's fear of coat racks.
  • There’s some controversy in the episode over whether yeast is a plant or an animal. It turns out it’s part of the fungus kingdom, which makes it neither plant nor animal. The same goes for mushrooms, which Jake mistakenly classifies as plants.
  • We both love radio edits, and “Back That Thang Up” is right up there with the Geto Boys’ “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” radio edit.
  • Phil’s son Teddy had a Pokemon novelization where the dialogue of the Pokemon is written out like: “Charmander” said Charmander. “Squirtle,” replied Squirtle, “squirtle squirtle”.
  • Jessica Rabbit gets mentioned again. Phil almost convinced his wife that Jessica Rabbit was a cyclops.
  • An email from a listener gets us talking about the Jersey Shore (not the MTV show) some more.
  • While looking for examples of old fashioned one-piece bathing suits, the Keystone Cops, and old cartoons that use a dotted line from the eye to show where someone is looking, we found this spectacular picture of Coney Island by Gluyas Williams.
  • Lazy googling by Phil revealed that Bob’s Burgers seems to be set in Ocean City, New Jersey.
  • It looks like the “palace” (beyond which hemi-powered drones scream) in Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” is Palace Amusements, an indoor amusement center on the Asbury Park waterfront that operated for a century from 1888 to 1988. The famous mural of Tillie was on this building. Jake remembers seeing the decrepit Palace-- which had been shuttered for over a decade-- when he first visited Asbury Park in 2000. It was torn down by developers in 2004.
