Long before anyone had uttered the phrase, 'gritty realism', Batman fans were making do with the fantastical, gothic world of Tim Burton. A world where supervillains could only get their powers from animals. Where Batman's 'no kill' rule didn't extend to using his car engine as a flamethrower at point blank range. A world that gave cinemagoers the maximum amount of Shrek they would see on a screen until Shrek 1. Abandoned babies, defenestrations, giant rubber ducks and some of the worst dialogue ever committed to film, it's the Batman film whose influence can still be felt now.
