#117 - Dorian Oliver-Lyons: Harnessing ADHD and Anxiety for Creative Growth

Listen Later

Dorian Oliver-Lyons, who has acquired valuable tools for learning with ADHD and anxiety. Having stepped away from a previous field of work, he is now in the process of returning, bringing fresh perspectives and insights with him. Our conversation will explore three key themes: self-expression and creativity, the power of storytelling through history and theatre, and the importance of self-investment in personal growth and change.

Self-expression is a constantly evolving journey, especially for those navigating ADHD and anxiety. Dorian has found that as he learns more about ADHD, his methods of self-expression adapt accordingly. He channels creativity into both work and leisure, using it as a tool to make challenging tasks more enjoyable. Various creative outlets have played a significant role in his ability to express himself authentically, including drawing, photography, Dungeons & Dragons, and living history reenactments. These activities allow him to explore aspects of himself in ways that feel both safe and fulfilling. Additionally, Dorian has discovered that structure and routine enhance his creative process. By planning out his days—including work, social engagements, and creative time—he is able to maintain a balanced approach to self-expression while keeping his goals in focus.

Storytelling, whether through history or theatre, has been instrumental in Dorian’s personal empowerment. Participating in historical reenactments and theatre has pushed him out of his shell, forcing him to engage with people in various social settings while embracing roles that may initially feel unconventional. One of the most rewarding aspects of this work is the ability to communicate historical narratives in a way that brings them to life for audiences. When reflecting on figures who inspire him, Dorian highlights Paul Kane, a largely self-taught artist who documented Indigenous and Métis communities through his paintings in the mid-19th century. Theatre, in particular, has helped Dorian improve his emotional intelligence by teaching him to recognize and express emotions more effectively. By exaggerating physical cues on stage, he has learned to read social signals more clearly and apply that understanding to everyday interactions, making communication more intuitive and expressive.

A crucial part of Dorian’s recent journey has been learning to invest in himself in meaningful ways. One of the biggest mindset shifts he has undergone is recognizing the difference between impulsive spending for immediate gratification and purposeful investments in personal well-being. Moving out on his own required a financial reset, but as he gained stability, he chose to direct his resources toward long-term benefits like a recreation center membership and quality workout gear. These choices reflect an intentional commitment to his physical and mental health. Balancing external expectations with personal needs remains an ongoing challenge, but he acknowledges the importance of self-discipline and seeking support from friends and family. One of the most valuable lessons he has learned is that different people perceive the same events in distinct ways, and understanding those perspectives has been key to his personal growth. By working on communication and building self-awareness, he continues to navigate the complexities of change with greater confidence.

Dorian’s journey is a testament to the power of self-awareness and continuous learning. From creativity as a tool for self-expression to storytelling as a means of empowerment, he has found ways to navigate ADHD and anxiety while embracing his passions. His growing commitment to self-investment highlights the importance of prioritizing long-term well-being over short-term gratification. As he continues his path of personal and professional growth, his experiences offer valuable insights into resilience, adaptability, and the ongoing pursuit of self-improvement.
