Picture ancient Jerusalem, around 970 BCE. King David—the shepherd boy who became Israel's greatest warrior and king—is dying. He's about seventy years old, lying in his bed, unable to keep warm no matter how many blankets his servants pile on him. His forty-year reign is ending, and everyone knows what that means: a power struggle is coming.
