🔥[12-09] Discover your creative process with the right questions and clear purpose

Listen Later

Jacob Wells: I want to work on jumping back into working on the spec trailer after receiving feedback from the editor.

  • Sift it out the advice that you don’t need to pay attention to. It is told through their lens but it is not the only way to do it. The only process that’s right is the one that works for you.
  • Notice how the quality of your question shapes the quality of the advice you get, and use this to cut through overwhelming creative opinions with clarity and intentionality.
  • Ask for someone’s process instead of what you “should do” to unlock more useful, less prescriptive guidance that actually helps you grow your own creative voice.
  • When reaching out for guidance or mentorship, ask questions that lead to you being able to take action, and report those results to further and deepen the relationship.
  • Think of your purpose for cutting a specific trailer. It will dictate the film that you choose (but do not pick recognizable movies as much as possible).
  • Step back and focus on your real goal to help clarify your next steps and where to focus your attention.
