Collocations are simply words that are traditionally used together by native English speakers, so that their combination becomes expected.  Unlike idioms, the individual words in collocations retain their own meaning.  Collocations can occur in a number of different patterns, including:​

Verb + noun​  

Verb + adverb​  

Noun + verb​
