12: Fruits o' World Unite!

Listen Later

This week Cliff opens a fruity surprise: Lindemans lambic pours and the studio instantly smells like a dessert counter. We use that sweetness as an excuse to count down the Top 10 fruits sold worldwide (bananas, watermelons, apples and the usual suspects), argue about whether sales should be measured by weight or value, and debate the best ways to pair fruit-forward beers with food — from M&S Beef Wellington to spicy Thai street food. Along the way we test a couple of Lindemans variants, consider the merits of a cheeky shandy (Phoenix Panaché makes an appearance) and wonder whether fruit beer is legitimately a dessert or just a very polite starter.

It’s the festive end-of-term, so the episode is punctuated with school concert memories, exhausted music teachers, and nostalgic takes on “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” — plus the confessions and resolutions only revealed after the last mince pie. We take a detour into grocery-store culture (Tesco vs M&S, Charlie Bigham vs supermarket ready meals), the controversy of privatised water versus public drinking water, and an odd-but-honest segment on juicers, watermelon hydration and why everyone’s aunt owns one.

Tech and pop collide mid-episode as we tackle AI music (Suno, Udio), label power (Warner Music) and whether algorithms could ever replace Taylor Swift’s songwriting — spoiler: not unless they learn to tell dad jokes. There’s also streaming-era nostalgia (X Factor/BGT vs Spotify), a few groan-worthy Little Timmy jokes, and a silly “Hey there Porsche” riff that somehow becomes an earworm. The result is half food show, half rant, and entirely Christmassy: fizzy, tart, and full of opinions. Pour yourself something fruity and join us — and if you’ve got a Lindemans flavour or fruit-beer pairing we should try, DM us and we’ll pop it on the tasting list.
