The men stretch their knuckles and arms in unison. My twin torturers! They’ve looked forward to this moment all their lives. Today, one hundred and thirty was my lucky number. That was the number of the children I’d taken away. How I wish I’d just left them all behind. I tense my body and ready myself for the beating. It can't be worse than the peg leg. That was until the first hit.

“Ein!” shouted one man.

His job was to keep count. This depends on my being able to take any more lashes though. I very much doubt he will be counting for long.

“Zwei!”

“Drei!”

“Vier!”

I am seriously doubting if I will even survive long enough to savour the rest of these lashes.

“Acht!”

“Hit him harder!” shouts the old man.
