Jana is a young woman from Wuppertal, Germany living her dream life in Canada. She moved there two years ago following her heart to be with her girlfriend. Since then she managed to make herself a comfortable life and name as a freelance videographer in Vancouver.

She graduated from SAE Institute Köln-digital film and animation and then deepened her studies as a media designer Picture and Sound at @PICKUP MEDIA KÖLN. After that she worked several years in the world of scripted reality TV, travelled Germany and after a road trip through Canada she started freelancing for the film industry.

Working as a woman in a male-dominated field is quite hard to do, but doing so as a female freelancer in a foreign country in the film industry is quite another challenge. 16+ h working days, lifting heavy equipment all day long is part of the joy. As well as having the ability to not let your male colleagues get to you and stand up for yourself when you are oftentimes alone and disadvantaged. Still, she loves working in film and loves the open-minded community especially when it comes to her sexual orientation, she never felt the need to hide.

Other than a lot of other stories she had an easy time being accepted by her family and friends after coming out to her loved ones. Especially the story with her mother is the sweetest thing you ever heard.  

Jana is an advocate for female empowerment in the film industry but never sugar coats that you need to have thick skin to make it.

In this interview we are talking about feminism and inequality in the film industry, what it means to follow your heart, stereotypes about lesbians and why you should never hide who you are to live a fulfilled life.
