Jon Krakauer wrote a book in 1996 called Into the Wild. It tells the story of a young man named Christopher McCandless who, after graduating from Emory University in 1990, went out on his own into the American West. The story ends tragically with McCandless dying of starvation in Denali National Park in Alaska. The book is a reminder of both the allure and the danger of the wilderness. For many, the wilderness is a place of discovery and renewal, for others it’s threatening and dangerous. For Jesus, it seems to have been both. Fresh from his baptism, Jesus sets out into the wild and faces some of the same sorts of temptations we face in our lives. We all end up in the wilderness sometimes, what can we learn from Jesus that will help us navigate it?
