"Many people," Luke writes, "have already applied themselves to the task of compiling an account of the events that have been fulfilled among us. They used what the original eyewitnesses and servants of the word handed down to us. Now, after having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, I have also decided to write a carefully ordered account for you.”
Luke does exactly what he sets out to do. His gospel is a rich, detailed history of the life of Jesus from the very beginning. We’re going to be going though Luke's gospel for awhile, beginning this Advent season with the first chapter. The first chapter of Luke is full of the supernatural - angels, impossible pregnancies, prophecies fulfilled. But it’s also a story of real people with real human questions.
This Advent season, we’ll be looking at the people in Luke’s gospel that prepare us to welcome Jesus at Christmas. We’ll be looking at the situations in their lives and the questions they ask and seeing how their stories and their questions inform ours. This Sunday, we begin with a look at Zechariah who has a question with which many of us can identify.
