Bad theology [dare I say heretical theology] has often reduced the mysterious birth of Jesus to a distortion of the true nature of the Grand Miracle of Christ's Incarnation. Heretical thinking describes the Incarnation as a mere manifestation of God's presence in a human life rather than a real incarnation in human flesh.
I think this is important for us to ponder as we too often reduce the gift of salvation to 'asking Jesus into our hearts' as if Jesus is merely an appendage.
Instead it is important to consider the theological truth that Jesus Christ is God incarnate. Scripture speaks of the incarnation as God 'assuming' human flesh. This means not just a physical body but ALL that human flesh is. Jesus Christ who is God incarnate, whose very identity is dependent upon God the Father, not an independent personality, takes human sin upon himself because we cannot give our sin to God the Father. He assumes our weaknesses. He assumes our sin and inability to come to God upon himself … into himself.
In a time when the Virgin birth of Christ is increasingly ignored, replaced by secular distortions of the meaning of Christmas, when the virgin birth of Jesus is a mere mythological religious fable, it is important for the Christian Church to defend this doctrine to give valid and compelling reasons for this belief.
I will close with this exhortation.
IN the age where Christmas movies ask us all whether we truly believe in Christmas … whether we truly believe in Santa Clause … whether we truly believe in and have the Christmas Spirit … all so that Santa’s sleigh will have the magic power to travel around the world and give presents to all children … all in one night …
… I think Christians should ponder whether we truly believe
But Christians believe in the Incarnation and all its implications for our sinful state.
God HIMself assumed our sin. His Son Jesus Christ sits today at the right hand of the Heavenly Father as a risen and incarnate Savior. He possesses a new and resurrected body.
All of this happened because God the Father loves us.
All of this is TRUE because God the Son lived, ministered, laughed, suffered, died, and rose from the grave, ascended into heaven … for the Father’s glory and our salvation.
Do you Truly Believe?
