124: Chola Magnolia "Stand Femme"

Listen Later

Chola Magnolia's piece "Stand Femme" speaks to femmephobia and femme invisibility within the queer community and how it spreads to society and vice versa. “Femme” is a lesbian identity that was created in the working class lesbian bar culture of the 1950’s. It was a term used to distinguish feminine lesbians and bisexual women from their butch/masculine counterparts and partners. Today it might also represent a gay non-binary individual, an asexual transwoman, or used to self-describe queer femininity for persons of any gender. In short, femme identification, both aesthetically and identity-related, means you are feminine AND you fall somewhere on the LGBTQIA spectrum.
