Questions are a good place to start

Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every day of the week!  This is message #124 and I am Aaron Havens.

Have you ever had a mis-understanding with someone?  Feelings were hurt, appointments were missed, funds were misused, when you heard NO what they actually said was GO?

Some of the biggest arguments and hardest conversations have come from assuming the wrong thing about a statement or action.  Especially when the conversation is perceived as an attack on me.  Once that line has been crossed in my head, it’s like I turn into self preservation mode.  My past pain or hurt rises to the surface and I’m ready to attack or get far away from the situation.  It’s in these moments I’ve learned to BE QUIET for a few minutes.  Don’t say the first thing that comes to mind.  Especially if the person is someone I know rather well and the mis-understood comment seems to go against what I know of that person’s character.

My friends, next time you find yourself in a mis-understanding...
Slow down.  Think.  Breathe.  Ask some clarifying questions before you jump to conclusions and get your blinders on.  Questions are a good place to start.

"The wise man doesn't give the right answers, he poses the right questions."

Claude Lévi-Strauss

Nope… not everyone thinks like you.  Nope… not everyone processes life like you.  And yes… we all have a different lenses in which we view the world.  Statement and answers might not be the best approach in your next conflict.  Well posed and thought through questions might serve you, the situation and the conflict well.  More data might be needed.  More understanding might be needed.  Take an extra few minutes to “clean your pallet” so you can come at the scenario with an open mind, ready to gain clarity and understanding as you honor the other party and honor yourself.  Let’s be a people that starts with good questions today.

Thanks for calling in today.  Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic!  After the beep:

When your heart rate shoot through the roof in 2.5 seconds… have you trained yourself to slow down, take a few deep breathes, practice maturity… or… yeah… what’s your go to reaction… let me know after the beep.
