Today, I'd like to introduce you to Setsubun, a traditional spring event in Japan.

Setsubun節分” is the day before "Risshun立春”, "Rikka立夏”, "Risshu立秋”, and "Rittou立冬”, which are the turning points of the seasons.

Setsubun is the day before the seasonal milestones of Risshun, Rikka, Risshu, and Rittou.

In the lunar calendar, the year begins in spring, so the day before Risshun (the first day of spring) is considered to be very important, and now it is widely recognized that the day before Risshun = Setsubun (the first day of spring).

The custom of driving away demons is said to be based on a court event called Tsuina追儺, which originated from a Chinese custom.

The Chinese event that is said to be the origin of the event was in the twelfth month of the lunisolar calendar. It was the time when winter turned into spring, and it was believed that demons would bring sickness and misfortune to the people, so Mamemaki豆まき is said to have originated as a way to drive out the demons, send off the old year, and welcome in the new year, the spring spirit, and good fortune.

「節分」とは、季節の節目である「立春」「立夏」「立秋」「立冬」の前日のことだそうです。「季節の分け目」の日という意味です。

旧暦では春から1年が始まるとされているので、「立春」の前日である「春の節分」が大切とされ、今では「春の節分」＝「節分」という認識が広まったのです。

鬼払いの風習は、中国の風習を由来とする追儺と呼ばれた宮中行事を元としているとされています。

行事の由来とされる中国の歳事は、太陰太陽暦で十二月の歳事でした。冬から春に変わるときで、鬼が民に病や災禍をもたらすとされたため、疫鬼を駆逐し、古い年を送り、新たな年、春の陽気、吉福を内に迎え流ために行われたのが豆まきの起源とされています。
