Join me in The Red Treehouse as we explore El Cuco, the Puerto Rican Bogeyman. It’s a near-universal truth that legends about the Bogeyman exist all over the world, and while these monsters take on different forms and have unique backstories, the Bogeyman stands as a reminder of the power of folklore and oral tradition.
In many Spanish-speaking countries, the Bogeyman is known as “El Coco,” though the specific name varies from country to country and culture to culture. Other variations of El Coco include “Coca, Cucuy, Cuca, Cucu, Cucui,”—and of course, El Cuco. Despite the variations in name and details, there is a terrifying reality that ties them all together:
El Coco is a child-eater.
What makes this monster so scary? And does he really snatch unruly children or is he nothing more than an urban legend?
