128: How to Handle Overwhelm in Real Estate

Listen Later

How to handle overwhelm? This was the question I was asking myself after receiving a tough to read email from a podcast listener. And no, before you ask, it wasn't tough to read because I'm getting older and need glasses. My wife already beat you to that joke.

It was a difficult email to read because it contained some harsh criticism for the podcast. It was tough to read because I love doing the show, and want to produce the highest quality product I can for everyone. And it was hard to read because it was true. So, how to handle overwhelm? That is the question I needed answered.

Dr. Dan Wurzelmann

For help with tackling the issues of being overwhelmed, anxiety, fear, and vulnerability we turn to Dr. Dan Wurzelmann. Dr. Wurzelmann is the host of the Learn Psych podcast.

He is currently completing his fourth year of psychiatry residency training at the University of Michigan in the Department of Psychiatry, where he is the University Hospital Inpatient Chief Resident. He graduated from medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Learn Psych Podcast is an educational podcast about psychiatry, intended for students, trainees, and health care providers.

How to Handle Overwhelm

The first thing you need to do is recognize you have a problem. We've heard this over and over again in life. It's one of the first steps of AA - admit you have a problem. And Dr. Wurzelmann even talks about how he didn't even realize he was having a particular issue until he went to see a therapist. Self awareness can be a tricky thing to master, but the importance of it as a skill can not be overstated.

According to Dr. Wurzelmann, we also have a tendency to minimize how much stress we truly have going on in our lives at any given moment. And I'd definitely be the first to raise my hand to having this issue.

One strategy he mentioned that has been effective with his patients is meditation. For many hearing a doctor say give mediation a go might seem crazy. However, like we've talked about numerous times on the show, it has been proven to be an incredibly effective tool.

Another area we touch on is the fear we can experience in different areas of our business. It's important to know that fear alone isn't a bad thing. Sometimes it could just be a sign that you need to lean into something. Or it can be a warning sign. However, Dan also mentions that fear can be an adaptive thing, and that you might experience it in the wrong situation because something about today was similar to the last time you made a mistake.
