128 - Nuremberg - Review

Listen Later

In the aftermath of World War II, as Nazi Germany surrenders, high-ranking leaders—including Hitler's second-in-command, Hermann Göring—are captured and held for trial. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon) pushes for an unprecedented international tribunal in Nuremberg to prosecute them for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and more, establishing new legal precedents rather than summary executions.

At the center is psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, tasked with evaluating the mental fitness of the imprisoned Nazis (especially the charismatic and manipulative Göring) to stand trial. What begins as a clinical assessment evolves into a tense, obsessive psychological duel as Kelley probes the nature of evil, forms a disturbing bond with Göring, and grapples with his own ambitions and the horrors he's uncovering.

River and Nath spent just under two hours raving about Nuremberg (2025)—and it was electric. They dove deep into the heavy subject matter, layering in philosophical angles on justice, morality, and human nature. The powerhouse performances (Crowe and Malek absolutely dominate), razor-sharp direction, and a script that masterfully balances unflinching historical accuracy with genuine cinematic magic made it one of the best recent historical dramas. A near-perfect fusion of real-world weight and filmcraft that leaves you thinking long after the credits roll.
