Listen Later

Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) awakens alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no memory of his identity or mission. As fragments return, he discovers he's on a desperate solo voyage to reverse a mysterious Astrophage phenomenon dimming the Sun and threatening life on Earth. Through problem-solving and unexpected contact with an alien entity nicknamed Rocky, Grace must harness science, ingenuity, and unlikely alliance to save humanity.

Hey film fam, welcome back to the pod. In this episode, River and Nath dive headfirst into Project Hail Mary—the big 2026 sci-fi swing from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. We break down what works, what stumbles, and why this one’s still worth the ride even when we don’t agree on everything.

We cover:

  • The premise, the amnesia hook, and how the big plot turns land
  • Ryan Gosling carrying the whole damn movie on his shoulders
  • Themes of loneliness, unlikely friendship, sacrifice, and what it means to “save everyone”
  • Greig Fraser’s gorgeous cosmic cinematography + those killer practical sets and Rocky puppetry
  • The highs and lows of pacing, emotional beats, and that late-act twist we both felt betrayed the trust the film built
  • Behind-the-scenes stuff: Andy Weir’s involvement, the practical-effects love, and how the directors brought their chaotic-fun energy to hard sci-fi
  • Quick side-by-side with The Martian and Arrival
  • Audience love vs. our mixed feelings on the contrived sacrifice
  • The moral and philosophical questions it leaves hanging
  • What could’ve been tightened, and why the heart still wins out
