13 | Bear Man's Bluff - Pre-Civil War Trading on the Neches River

Listen Later

Bear Mans Bluff is a known high point along the Neches River in Silsbee, TX that was originally settled before the Civil War and was utilized as a harbor for trade with boats moving up and down the river.  It's name comes from the "Mystery Men", Confederate deserters, hiding out in the wilds of the Big Thicket that would leave out bear meat in exchange for various sundries and goods from  steamboats that would dock at the bluff.

Today, not far from this docking site and upon the bluff, sits a beautiful lodge and guest houses.   In this episode we are joined by the property owner, Paige Windham, local REALTOR Vivian Todd, and family friend/ranch hand, Dylan Wilson.
