You want to train & have the most realistic training for your volunteer department, but you don't have the time/budget/resources/etc. to put on the fancy burn building scenarios.  So, what do you do?  Usually the same thing you've always done - crawling stress-free in the station bays with your nomex over your mask, practicing the skills of the extrication (but never scenarios of a victim being trapped), or becoming the best "parking lot fire" engine crew.  You do the same thing every month or at least the same thing every time you practice that topic.  The guys get bored & just go through the motions.  Your group starts losing the enthusiasm & will to perform at practice.  You wonder - there has GOT to be a way to simulate the real thing better than this.

We want to help.  In this episode, we gathered a bunch of different ways to make training more realistic- on a budget - from our experiences on the fireground, conference trainings, the web, and just plain imagination.  Nothing in this episode is revolutionary, but it doesn't have to be.  They're things we don't think about because fire departments tend to do trainings the same way every time.

As always, we don't claim to be experts.  We're two people who love to talk fire.  All we want is to give the inspiration to anyone listening to take the steps to bettering their volunteer fire department however they can.
