#130 — Equity, inclusion, and beautiful mistakes w/ Amil Reddy

Listen Later

Amil Reddy is a Equity & Inclusion Speaker and an incredible educator. They join Steph at the mic this week to talk about equity in the workplace, the power of pronouns, and how allies can better show up for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. “My diversity training and culture of competency training is not about vocabulary and what to say or do … my training and my work with teams and executives is how not to be an asshole.” Amil shares strategies to start the conversation around equity and inclusion, and ways to stop making folks feel othered. They also highlight the need to create space for people to grow and change. Whether someone wants to change their pronouns, or to correct a mistake — there is space for it all.“I’m a huge fan of beautiful mistakes if you are in a learning environment, in a space of growth.”The language and scope of diversity and inclusion work has evolved over the years — but Amil explains that all are valid and important — because systems need to change. “When it comes to working to elevate equity seeking groups or to gain equity, it’s not about a hierarchy of needs, to me it’s about a holistic approach of looking at what we need to do to change our systems, to change systematic oppression.” Tune to hear Amil’s advice and guidance around being a better, more inclusive human.
