Sisterhood of Secrets

133. The Hmong Sleep Deaths

Listen Later

Hey Friends,

In this episode, The Sisters explore the mystery of the Hmong sleep deaths. In the late 1970s and ’80s, healthy young men were dying in their sleep with no medical explanation, a phenomenon later called Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome.

In Hmong belief, a night spirit known as Dab Tsog comes in dreams, sits on the chest, steals breath, and can kill. The Sisters examine chilling first-hand accounts, the medical theories behind fatal heart rhythm disturbances, and the eerie overlap between science and the supernatural.

Was it a genetic condition… or something that followed them in the dark? Thoughts?
