Chequered Past

13th October 1996: The Champion Who Silenced the Doubters

Listen Later

On October 13th, Suzuka once again became the stage where Formula 1 history was written.

In 1996, Damon Hill faced the ultimate test — one race to prove he could do what many said he never would. As his rival and teammate Jacques Villeneuve faltered, Hill drove with quiet precision to seal the World Championship, becoming the first son of a world champion to win the title himself.

We revisit that defining day — complete with Murray Walker’s unforgettable call — and explore the enduring story of Peter Sauber, the modest Swiss engineer who built his first race car in his parents’ basement and kept his team alive through every era of change.

Then, we trace Suzuka’s place in Formula 1’s dynasties — from Ferrari’s dominance in 2002, to Vettel and Red Bull’s mastery in 2013, to Mercedes’ modern reign in 2019 — revealing how this legendary circuit has crowned champions across generations.
