This week we're having a beer with Calgary radio legend Fraser Tuff. Our chat takes us from his first record purchase to movies that bring him to tears, his mantra: “Calm down and don’t be a dick!”
You might be surprised to find out that Fraser's not much of a morning guy, despite being Today Radio's morning guy! Fraser's love of radio and music started early, Hall & Oates Rockin’ Soul was the first cassette Fraser ever bought, and he still listens to it regularly today. Our usual question for guests about their favourite song natural has to expand for someone as passionate about music as Fraser, so we get his picks for favourite bands of all time and his favourite new band: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, who Fraser says everyone needs to be listening to.
We discuss Fraser’s love for travel, which started late in life. Fraser took a big risk and left his job at 42 to travel, having missed out on the opportunity when he was in his 20s. We discuss his trip to Nepal, where he had his ideas challenged around the value of money, and more importantly, the value of community. We also get the story of his trip to Russia, which was not at all what he expected. Unlike the idea he’d had of Russia from Rocky IV, he tells us that most Russians he met just wanted to smoke weed and take his picture.
