Let me explain. A social experiment that started with a fake hairstyle (ponytail) and included an incredibly exaggerated hardline stance on wearing a mask during the pandemic, calling for racial equality and other social issues that I believe shouldn’t be partisan, is finally complete. I wondered what would happen if I “flipped the script” and suddenly didn’t fit perfectly in the box that my relatively new and extensive far-right friends list had put me in. I knew I would draw out a few hateful people. But I was astonished how many people effectively lost their minds over a few perceived differences of opinion. When did we all become so sensitive? When did we abandon all civility? When did it stop being an admirable quality to think independently?
I knew fatal tribalism had dominated our current political landscape, but I sorely underestimated the strength of the wall of conformity we have erected around our political tribes. Deviating the slightest degree from the playbook written in stone is now a capital offense punishable by death. People who claimed to support me and even people who have known me my whole life, and even those who offered support and understanding when I overdosed and was charged with aggravated assault, now told me things like, “Have a nice life.” or that I, “lost my mind”. Several even threatened me, a few attacked me personally and even said hateful and disgraceful things about my wife. It was very eye-opening. But of course, I did have many real friends private message their full support regardless of any differences on issues. Listen to this episode to learn how I really feel about things or don’t. I really don’t care.
