#14 Know Yo Pepo - Romeo Kumalo

Today we are joined by Romeo Kumalo the former ICT executive and investor. We discuss his upbringing in Soweto in the 1980's, his experiences playing sports and music as well as his family members joining the armed struggle. We also talk about his parents and their first interaction at Dube Train Station.
Romeo matriculated in Soweto then went on to study advertising at AAA School of Advertising where he was one of the very first black students at the time. He then went on to complete his MCom with UNISA before undertaking the Advanced Management Program and the Private Equity & Venture Capital Program at Harvard Business School.
We discuss his experiences with being in front of and behind the mic at MetroFM and how he rose through the ranks to become the GM of the SABC. He also discusses how he was required to travel across the US and the UK so that he could learn about the business of entertainment and broadcasting.
He shares his experience on how he was head-hunted by Alan Knott-Craig to Vodacom, where he started out as the Group Executive of Strategy & Business Development before moving to East Africa to run Vodacom Tanzania. Upon returning to South Africa, he then become the Chief Commercial Officer (SA) before finally ending his tenure with Vodacom as CEO of International Business.
He walks us through the journey of his evolution from being an Executive to an entrepreneur focused on ICT & infrastructure investing, which he does through Washirika Holdings, an ICT infrastructure investment company. He also discusses LLH Capital, a venture capital firm which he co-founded, and his role as chair of Kalon Venture Partners.
He also shares his passion for running and music, some of his hobbies, his favourite city, some of his pet peeves, as well as his love for sports cars...vrrr pha! We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did making it!
