St Matthias was selected as the 12th apostle to replace Judas. The apostles had cast lots to choose him after Jesus’ ascension into heaven and before the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles at Pentecost. St Matthias’ feast day was moved to May 14th from February 24th so as to celebrate it in Eastertide, close to the Solemnity of the Ascension.
