For the last 4 and a half years, since I’ve been in the Viroqua area basically, I’ve been hearing whispers of a powerful movement that rolled through here in the early 2000’s with the goal of making the entire region sustainable.

It was called The Transition Town Movement.

Once upon a time in Viroqua…(20 years ago)… it gained a lot of steam in the area and then faded away…

Or did it?

Ever heard of the Food Enterprise Center? Or The Commons?

These are a couple of outgrowths of this movement…as well as the S.M.R.T. Bus and the E3 coalition…it turns out that many amazing gifts came to bless this region as a direct result of Transition Town.

So what exactly is Transition Town?

And why did it “go away”?

Great question!!

That is why we brought on one of the 3 original leaders of this movement locally, Dr. David Banner, to fill in the gaps about what exactly this movement was/is, how they were able to accomplish what they did, how we can bring it back,…and much more!

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but things are getting crazy out there!

Look at the state of the world…look at Texas!!

Has there ever been a more critical time to take a serious look at the way we are going about our business on this planet?

Is this really sustainable?

Or is there a fast approaching deadline racing toward our current lifestyle and the conveniences we’ve grown accustomed to?

How can we be more resilient?

How can we live in a way that honors nature?

How can we protect our future generations?

How can we learn to depend on each other rather than big institutions and people far away from us that we’ve never met?

Many people in this area (The Driftless Region) are already making great strides towards living more sustainably…how can we get more organized as community and work together?

In transition town there exists a powerful structure to do all this and more. And it’s already been done here locally…

We just have to pick up where they left off
