The Annabelle movies, part of the larger Conjuring universe, introduced the cursed doll to the masses. And while the movies depict her as terrifying—and murderous—at first glance, she isn’t particularly striking or scary. And, since 1970, she has sat in a glass enclosure at Ed and Lorraine Warren’s Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut—with a warning at the bottom of the case that reads: “Warning, positively do not open.”

But how did a regular Raggedy Anne doll become a harbinger of evil?

Is Annabelle really cursed? Is she possessed by a malevolent force, or is she nothing more than a child’s plaything?
