Microsoft has gone ham on acquisitions over the past decade spending over $140 billion on buying companies like LinkedIn, GitHub, Mojang, Zenimax, Nuance, and most recently, Activision Blizzard. These acquisitions have made Microsoft look like a genius over the past decade as they have allowed Microsoft to finally grow past its dotcom high and push to the next level. However, while this strategy works great during bull markets, it often doesn’t work out as well during bear markets and times of uncertainty. You see, managing vastly different businesses with different cultures, goals, and users is not as easy as you might think. In fact, this was one of the main factors that eventually took down GE.
