#143: Self-Preservation in the Face of Disappointment [Podcast]

Listen Later

Welcome to Episode 143 of the Sheep Dressed Like Wolves Podcast. In this show I examine some ways in which we experience a fear of things ending and the impact that can have on our lives. How can we become mindful of the present and really embrace who we are, where we are, without self-sabotaging in order to self-preserve through fear of things finishing.

We hate it when good things end. The disappointment, the sadness, the void, getting back into a slightly less than great version of reality.

I used to listen to Simon and Mark's film reviews on the BBC every week religiously. I would refresh my podcast feed impatiently awaiting the latest show each Friday evening. This went on for years. But then all of a sudden one week everything changed. A sweeping fear shuddered through my body. It dawned on me that this routine, this entertainment that I treasured so much wouldn't last forever. One day they will end the radio show. It was inevitable.

This happeed about 3 years ago. I stopped listening, and I haven't listened since. It feels irrational. To be scared of losing something to the point where you sabotage its existence and create the very outcome you are afraid of. Self-sabotage for the sake of self-preservation. It sounds strange but it happens a lot and many of us will recognise where it manifests in our lives.

In this episode I explore the following areas of life that fear of disappointment can take hold:

1. Holidays and Days Off
2. Relationships
3. Work
4. Joy
5. The Ordinary
6. Culture (Art)

Over to You
Question: Do you recognise any of these fears from this episode? What do you fear being over most?
