15. Colourism

Listen Later

Unfortunately white people are not the only ones we experience othering from.  Growing up, we would hear a lot in reference to how dark our skin is; sometimes as a joke, a term of endearment - queue eye roll -, and even straight up disrespect from our own community.  Within brown culture fair skin is what has been explicitly desired for centuries.  Fairer skin has been the standard for so long that when a darker skinned individual is beautiful, it is considered astounding.  We dig into the origins of colourism in post-colonial India and discuss how it manifests itself in our world today.
