15: How to Choose a Merchant Provider

Today in class I discussed how I would go about choosing the best merchant service provider for your business. What are the signs to look for and what questions you should ask during your research and discovery.

Topics to consider are the following:

  1. Decide which type of credit card processor you want to work with.
  2. Consider how you plan to accept card payments.
  3. Call at least three processors for pricing quotes.
  4. Request interchange-plus rates.
  5. Find out about fees.
  6. Get a month-to-month contract.
  7. Buy processing equipment.
  8. Vet any "free" offers.
  9. How helpful is customer support?
