#15: Local Currency Liberation w/ Mark Heffernan
In the spirit of Transition Town, This week we resume our path down sustainability road with the main focus being
Currency!….Sovereignty….and collaboration
My friend and guest, Mark Heffernon, former contributor to the Transition Town movement, has a unique evolved perspective on the matter that I am excited to share with you all…It has forever changed the way I think about the concept of money and our ability to collaborate with one another!
We were born on a beautiful planet with abundant soil and resources….surrounded by beautiful people all gifted with amazing skills and talents that they readily contribute to the community.
Everything we need to survive and thrive is right at our finger tips all the time ON the Earth and IN each other….the real wealth of life literally surrounds us….we are immersed in it….we can hardly escape it…
Why then have many of us chosen to dismiss this streaming flow of wealth all around us in favor of numbers on a screen and paper in our pockets?
Where does the real value lie???
In our bank accounts?
In stacks of neatly printed paper?
Or in the Earth? And our connection to it and each other?
Currency was originally used as a tool to track the ACTUAL value that exists all around us…
So how then did it come to pass that people these days seem to value the method used to calculate the value more than the ACTUAL value itself?
We have the skills
The resources are all around us
Is it possible to figure out a way to take inventory of these skill sets and resources that exist in our communities and allocate them in a manner thats serves the collective rather then just a small group of individuals??
Can we develop currencies at a local level more designed to serve our communities?
How can this assist us in local collaboration?
How can this assist us in taking responsibility for the well being of our communities and each other?
