The Burnt Out Experience

In college, Laura took a 17-22 credits every semester, worked part-time, was on the dance team, and she was also a cheerleader. She describes it as "a formula for burnout," but she didn't know it at the time.

So, one Saturday she had a BIG day planned, but what ended up happening? She put in a movie, cuddled on the floor with her dog, and couldn't move because she was so exhausted.

How did she deal? Recognition

Now, Laura starts to recognize her behaviors and how they give her clues into a looming burnout.

For her, she feels like she might have a slight concussion; she can't articulate her feelings and she feels headachy and confused. She can't speak well and is run out of reserves to be able to handle the emotions of others. That's not good when you deal with patient experience at a HUGE hospital.

Relax

Take a moment to curl up on the couch, stay in bed, or cuddle with your pets (or other loved ones). It doesn't make all your worries go away, but it sure helps.

Laura also says, if you don't get carried away, a glass of wine can help too.

Exercise

Laura explains that when she exercises, her thoughts are allowed to flow freely in her mind without much effort at all.

Reading and Writing

Journaling is amazing. Writing down your thoughts can do wonders for collecting them and then figuring out how to deal with them.

Laura's favorite thing to read when she is feeling down is a short poem called "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann written in 1927. You can find it here.
