Listen Later

Focusing on sustainability is the right thing to do. Serving your consumers in a sustainable way is a priority because it's the right thing. — Todd Cline

There’s a rising growth in people purchasing organic food and natural beauty & cosmetic products because consumers want to make sustainable choices especially when it comes to the products that they buy. But that’s not the case when it comes to cleaning and laundry products.

Today on Sustainable, I talk about the efforts of designing and launching Tide Purclean, the first plant-based laundry detergent that has the same cleaning power you can expect from the brand with Todd Cline.

He is the section head for Procter & Gamble’s North American Fabric Care Research Development Team. He’s responsible for developing new programs and business operations across Tide and Gain Laundry detergents, the leading brands in the industry.

Washing your clothes may seem like a simple house chore but doing laundry has a bigger impact on the planet than you might think. From washing to drying,  it uses a lot of energy to just heat the water and run the dry cycle.

How can we reduce the energy and water we use? How can we help consumers make decisions that are more sustainable as they do their laundry?

Todd shares what drive him and his team to create sustainable laundry products and the challenges they experience in developing it without sacrificing cleaning performance.

In this episode, Todd shares about:

  • The challenges he and his team had in developing a plant-based detergent without sacrificing cleaning performance
  • How washing in cold water (the number one driver of environmental footprint in doing laundry) setting reduces your environmental footprint.
  • The energy and impact of creating the raw materials that go into the product that they make
  • Helping consumers be confident and comfortable in purchasing sustainable products
  • Leveraging a brand’s reputation by incorporating it from one brand to another
  • Clothing longevity as another way to lessen your environmental impact
  • How we can design products that help consumers make simple choices
  • The “Milkman Model” for sustainable packaging
  • What Green Chemistry is all about and how it works
  • How  Focusing on sustainability made Todd more intentional in the choices he makes

The simple choices and actions we make to minimize our impact, makes all the difference towards achieving a sustainable world.
