Join me in The Red Treehouse as I read a terrific short horror story, Lazarus, by Leonid Andreyev.
First published in 1906, Lazarus by Leonid Andreyev, is a unique take on the Biblical story of the man whom Jesus raised from the dead. If you’re familiar with the Biblical story, Jesus is called upon to heal Lazarus from some type of illness. By the time Jesus arrives, Lazarus is both dead and buried; and where Mary and Martha are downtrodden over his death, Jesus confidently calls Lazarus from the tomb.
Centuries later, Andreyev’s story tells us “what happened after”—and the picture is less celebratory and more bleak—as Lazarus now knows the unknowable: what death is really like. This story is guaranteed to stick with you long after you’re done reading.
So, sit back, turn down the lights, pull up the covers, and pay close attention as I read Lazarus by Leonid Andreyev.
