#16 - Engineering New Hard Habits

Welcome to another episode of the Natural Born Leader Podcast! Today's topic revolves around a powerful technique: habit stacking. Simply put, it's about attaching new behaviors to existing ones, especially those you might not enjoy. For example, if you dislike management calls, try coupling them with something you like, such as grabbing your favorite coffee.

In my routine, I make getting coffee before a meeting something enjoyable. By connecting a positive experience to a less enjoyable task, the latter becomes more tolerable. This concept works both ways, looking forward to something after a task or doing something you like before tackling the challenging stuff.

Take this podcast, for instance. If I didn't habitually go for my morning bagel and coffee, I might not be as consistent in producing these episodes. Find something you already like doing, a habit that comes naturally, and let it serve as the cue for the new habit you want to establish.
